Still they come – a few more noteworthy book descriptions from the web, together with my comments and interpretations [in italics] :

A used book that may have some cosmetic wear (i.e. shelf-wear, slightly torn or missing dust jacket, dented corner, pages may include limited notes and highlighting). All text in great shape! Comes with our 100% Money Back Guarantee. Our customer service can't be beat!  [This is from a bookseller in the USA – the book costs £1.00, plus £2.80 postage.  If you send the book back because it’s completely shot to bits, you get back the £1.00.  You don’t get back the £2.80 it cost you to get the book posted to you or the £13.30 (!!!!) it cost to send the book back to the USA.  What this really means is that you don’t send the book back, but just put it down to experience.  So the USA bookseller never gets to hear about the legions of hopping mad customers he has in the UK . . . .]

2011 Hertfordshire Hard Cover very good pbk, 8vo  [So is it a hardback or a paperback?]

Some movement to the boards.   [Delusions of theatrical talent?]

The pages are generally very clean and bright, especially for age, minimal tanning, minimal grubby marks, some slight scattered foxing. A few corners lightly stubbed, turned, however shows little signs of having been read. Endpapers slight foxing, slight grubby marks, tape marks, slight foxing. Small Foyles sticker to front inside cover. Page ends slight tanning, slightly grubby, slight spotting. Book leans. D/J, clipped, generally clean and bright, slight grubby marks, tiny wear patches, slight scuffing. Corners lightly rubbed. Slight rubbing, creasing to edges. Spine rubbed to ends, tiny tear to tail. No repairs to jacket. Now in clear removable cover. Overall, lovely clean bright copy, especially for age.   [Doesn’t that sound remarkably like an ex-library book to you?]

Item in acceptable condition including possible liquid damage. As well, answers may be filled in. Might be an ex-library copy. This book may have damage; frayed or curled edges; a broken spine and other signs of damage. Dust jacket may be missing. Lastly, may be missing components, e.g. missing DVDs, CDs, Access Code, etc.  [Are you actually trying to sell this book?]

Hardcover. Book Condition: Acceptable. Light foxing to the page edges. Good reading copy. Acceptable: a readable copy. All pages and the cover are intact (dust cover may be missing). Pages can include considerable notes – in pen or highlighter – but notes cannot obscure the text.  [If you don’t know whether or not the dustwrapper is missing, how do you know that all pages are intact and all the text is readable?]

Still they come – a few more noteworthy book descriptions from the web, together with my comments and interpretations [in italics] :

First Edition. 160 pages. No dust jacket. Pages have a distinct odour. Mild wear to spine, board edges and corners. Moderate water staining and mould growth to boards. Unclipped dust jacket. Mild wear and tear to edges and corners. Mild staining and soiling to DJ. Check our feedback, all books quality controlled.  [OK – but I’d love to know how you control the quality of a secondhand book.  I’ve been trying for years.  Oh, and please tell me what counts as ‘moderate’ mould growth.  And how come the DJ is mildly stained and soiled if the book doesn’t have one?]

VERY GOOD. Very Good copy, cover and pages show some wear from reading and storage. Binding may have light creases. Lots of life left in these pages.  [Wear from storage?  Stored in the tumble dryer, then??]

Orders are dispatched Monday â€" Friday.   [Yeah, very useful.  Why don’t you work on øé7#g9ãç:{/ Saturdays, then?]

Used – Like New.1-3 weeks delivery. shipped from the UK. May be an ex-library copy. Used books do not normally come with their included CD.   [So a new book might go to the library first, and have its CD stolen.  Is that ‘like new’?]

No spinal creases   [Just a slight spinal tap, perhaps]

Acceptable items may shows sign of prior usage, pages stained or discoloured from the outside. Covers/corners and spine may be worn/bent, may contain stickers/stamps or previous owners name (May contain gift note).  [May be verging on the unacceptable, then]

Receive this fine as new book in 6-9 working days. Shipped from our UK supplier, via Royal Mail. We do not ship to Denmark.  [Yeah well, I blame Brexit]

UNUSED, clean and in Stock but has crack to spine and slight crease to book. [Sounds used to me . . .]

Possible ex-library copy with all the usual markings and stickers.  [May I give you a bit of advice?  If it has all the usual markings and stickers, it’s definitely ex-library]

Dust Jacket Condition: Includes dust jacket.  [So that’s all right, then]

Jacket has cover so is very good but stuck on inside with yellowing sellotape. Inside very good. Pages browned comenserate with age.   [Oh deer.  If your goin to use werds like ‘commensurate’ you ouht to lern how to spel them]

Very good – almost like with dustjacket.   [I like almost want to buy it]

Still they come – a few more noteworthy book descriptions from the web, together with my comments and interpretations [in italics] :

First edition; dust jacket age-toned/rubbed/lightly soiled, rear panel has small tear (<0.5 inch) near spine, panel edges rubbed/bumped with multiple tiny chips/tears (<0.25 inch), front panel top edge has ~1 inch tear, rear panel top edge has ~0.75 inch tear and ~1.25 inch tear, rear panel bottom edge has ~0.75 inch tear, rub spots along folds and spine junctures, front fold has ~0.25 inch tear, corners/spine ends bumped/rubbed with minor chips/tears (<0.25 inch), top spine end has ~0.75×0.25 inch chip and ~0.5 inch tear, bottom spine end has ~0.5 inch tear, spine lightly sunned, front flap top edge has ~0.25 inch tear, rear flap top edge has ~0.25 inch tear; cover very faintly soiled/rubbed with some faint age-toning along board edges, front board top and bottom edges lightly bumped, corners/spine ends lightly bumped/rubbed; edges very faintly age-toned/soiled; half title has light pencil erasures, ~5 pages of text block have some very faint insignificant soiling; binding tight; dust jacket, cover, edges, and interior intact and clean except as noted.   [Oh, get a life . . . . ]

1997 first printing in this exact hardback edition.  A very good copy, no text marking or inscription, in minimally used unclipped dust wrapper.  [Talk about making the most of what you’ve got – the book (which is non-fiction) was reissued in 2008 in a revised and updated edition, which is certainly the edition I’d prefer.]

Good – the front free endpaper seems to have been removed in a good dustjacket with about half the rear panel missing.   [Hmmm – so what’s your definition of “good”?]

Fine in crisp d/w.  [That is, left in the sun a bit too long]

Very quick service lovely big cheeseboard with 3 small pots for butter and chutneys.   [Customer review from The Website That Is Intent on World Domination of a reprint of the workshop manual for a 1967 Jaguar 420 car]

All pages detached from spine but held together in a few blocks mostly with just a few single pages loose.  [Absolutely shot to bits, you mean]

Book: used – acceptable.  **SHIPPED FROM UK** We believe you will be completely satisfied with our quick and reliable service. All orders are dispatched as swiftly as possible! Buy with confidence!  [We won’t bother to describe the book, but we’ll deliver it REALLY quickly!]
