The book is valuable in that it gives an overview of those branch lines active immediately before the Beeching cuts. The first Beeching Report in 1963 found that the least-used 50% of stations contributed only 2% of passenger revenue, and that one-third of route miles carried just 1% of passengers. It has to be said that the replacement bus services proved just as uneconomic . . .
