SALMON

The World’s Most Harassed Fish, illustrations from b&w photographs, numerous maps, diagrams, tables & graphs, bibliography & index, 304 pp, orange boards in d/w, very good condition, André Deutsch 1980

21.4 x 13.2 cm, 640g, ISBN 0 23396 856 3

The book's three sections deal with the life of the salmon, the Atlantic salmon and the Pacific salmon, respectively. The salmon’s biology and its extraordinary life-cycle make it vulnerable to human interference and depredation, and by the late 1970s many of its spawning rivers had become polluted (particularly from agricultural chemicals), dammed or diverted, so that the US Atlantic salmon population had virtually disappeared.  The author suggests remedies which might be taken to rescue the species.
