A farmer’s son from Frome, he enlisted in the RAF and was trained as an armourer, being sent out to Canada to work in the RAF training establishments there.  In 1943 he returned to England and served as an armourer on Halifaxes and Lancasters in bomber stations in Lincolnshire and Lancashire.
