Another tenuous local connection – Bader’s final flight in the Second War was from Westhampnett airfield, now better known as Goodwood Motor Circuit, seven miles from here.  The book includes some discussion on whether Bader’s Spitfire was shot down, or (as Bader himself thought) he had collided with one of the three Messerschmitt 109s he was pursuing.  Bader’s Spitfire lost its entire tail section, and he only managed to escape by leaving one of his prosthetic legs in the cockpit.
