GOTHIC NIGHTMARES

Fuseli, Blake and the Romantic Imagination, exhibition catalogue incorporating essays on pp 9-40, detailed catalogue on pp 42-212, profusely illustrated throughout, mostly in colour, with extensive bibliography and index, 224 pp in all, sewn paperback with uncreased spine, see note below on the book’s condition, By order of the Tate Trustees by Tate Publishing 2006

29.5 x 22.8 cm, 1240g, ISBN 1 85437 582 2

Despite the book’s size, weight and importance, it was only ever published in paperback, and is long out of print.  It was published to accompany the exhibition of the same name at Tate Britain in London between 15 February and 1 May 2006, but, as with many such catalogues, it represents a valuable monograph on the subject.  See below the brief description from the rear cover of the book, and the contents list.

Surprisingly, the Tate’s advertisement for the exhibition is still visible on their website at Gothic Nightmares: Fuseli, Blake and the Romantic Imagination | Tate Britain

This copy has an unusual fault in that the first 100 or so pages and the front cover have a diagonal bend from top to bottom of the pages.  The bend is barely perceptible by the time you reach the hundredth page.  I can only assume the book was at some time placed on a chair or bed and something heavy and angular was placed on top of it.  Having said that, the pages of the book, including the illustrations, are not otherwise damaged and the book would do very well as a study copy for a student.

Such a student had better be in the United Kingdom, as the book is very large, and even without packaging weighs well over a kilogramme.  While we can send the book within the United Kingdom for the paltry sum of £3.19, it would cost a great deal more to send it abroad, even to Ireland.  (And since Brexit, we have not been able to send a single book to Ireland – the automated Irish postal service rejects our books and sends them back!).  If you are outside the U.K. and are thinking about buying it, please email us first on enquiries@monkshillbooks.co.uk and we will quote a price for postage.
