HOW TO READ A CHURCH

An Illustrated Guide to Images, Symbols and Meanings in Churches and Cathedrals, very numerous illustrations from colour photographs, line-drawn illustrations and symbols in margins, appendix on the creed sequence, bibliography and index, 272 pp, grey boards in d/w, very slight creases to bottom front edge of d/w, otherwise in very good condition, Rider 2004

24.5 x 18.4 cm, 1090g, ISBN 1 84413 238 2

Not, except in passing, a book on church architecture – it is primarily concerned with the religious meaning of the various elements of the church.  See below the descriptions from the dustwrapper flap and from the rear of the dustwrapper.

Beware – the book was originally issued in 2003 in an edition without illustrations, and many of the copies on sale will be that far less useful edition.  Also be warned that this illustrated hardback edition is a heavy and solid book – if you take it with you, you had better be travelling by car . . . .

Probably because the book was so heavy, a paperback ‘pocket guide’ edition was issued in 2007, and that is the only edition still in print, at a steep £26.00.
