Captain Walker commanded the Second Support Group, which accompanied convoys across the Atlantic.  After Captain Walker’s untimely death in 1944 from a stroke, the author took over command of the Group.  See the description (below) from the dustwrapper flap.

The book was originally published in 1955 under a different title.  Now out of print.
