That is, the shafts of the Anglo-Saxon crosses at Bewcastle in Cumbria and Ruthwell in Dumfriesshire, both originally part of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria.  The author also deals at some length with the carvings on the ivory Throne of Maximianus at Ravenna, which bear some similarities with the carvings on the Anglo-Saxon crosses.
