Enlarged from the Rede Lecture delivered before the University of Cambridge on 20 May 1916, 7 plates (3 photogravures, the rest from b&w photographs), presentation inscription from author on front free endpaper (see picture below), xii & 92 pp, original red cloth, damp-marked (see pictures) and extremities rubbed and bumped, slight foxing throughout, internal hinges cracked but binding still sound, a good usable copy if not much to look at, Cambridge University Press 1916

That is, the shafts of the Anglo-Saxon crosses at Bewcastle in Cumbria and Ruthwell in Dumfriesshire, both originally part of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria.  The author also deals at some length with the carvings on the ivory Throne of Maximianus at Ravenna, which bear some similarities with the carvings on the Anglo-Saxon crosses.
