See the description (below) from the dustwrapper flaps.  The expedition, carried out under the auspices of UNESCO, was to establish whether the Silk Road could still be used for trade purposes.  The vehicle used was a Land Rover, and although most of the journey was on roads (the sand tyres they carried were never used), they still managed to break both rear shock absorber mountings on the roads in China.  The Toyota Land Cruiser used by their Chinese escorts had no such problems!

Long out of print.
