A public meeting in St Peter’s Fields in Manchester in 1819 was intended to gain support for social reform, but was interpreted by the authorities as the start of a revolution.  The cavalry were sent in to disperse the meeting, resulting in several dead and dozens wounded.  See also the description (below) from the dustwrapper flap. 

Although the book is properly bound in sewn gatherings, for some reason best known to Heinemann they used low-quality paper.
