VISIONARY SPIRES

Numerous illustrations in colour and b&w from photographs, artists’ impressions, architectural elevations, plans, cutaway drawings and floor-plans, bibliography & index, 144 pp, grey boards in d/w, closed top edge of pages a little spotted, otherwise in very good condition, Waterstone & Co. 1986

23.8 x 24.1 cm, 800g, ISBN 0 94775 212 9

Cathedrals and major churches were generally the end result of a competition (there is one ghastly red-brick church in Eastbourne which I am sure was a failed design for a power-station!).  This book examines designs for churches in Europe which, for one reason or another, were never executed.  Most of the designs date from the 18th and 19th centuries.  See also the description from the dustwrapper flap.
