WINGED PROMISES

A History of No.14 Squadron, R.A.F., 1915 – 1945, numerous b&w illustrations from photographs, portraits and cartoons, colour picture of squadron’s standard, numerous maps (and two on endpapers), double-page reproduction of aircraft log (included loose), bibliography, index of personnel and general index, x & 310 pp, blue boards in d/w, base of spine a little bumped, top of spine of d/w chipped (but neatly repaired), otherwise in very good condition, Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund Enterprises (Fairford, Gloucestershire) 1996

23.4 x 15.2 cm, 880g, ISBN 1 89980 845 0

The book has no dustwrapper ‘blurb’, so I have put together my own ‘essay’ – see below.  The book is extremely readable and does not pull its punches, particularly as regards the B-26 Marauder’s early shortcomings in squadron service.  The squadron knew it as “The Flying Prostitute” – its small wingspan meant it had “no visible means of support”!

For the record, the other three authors are Lord Deramore, Air Vice-Marshal Deryck Stapleton and Wing Commander Edmund Donovan.
